Silver orchid called Gin-ran, Erect cephalanthera, or Cephalanthera erecta (scientific name: Cephalanthera erecta) is a perennial plant of the genus Cephalanthera of the family Orchidaceae native to Japan, the Korean peninsula, and China. It is an above-ground orchid with low plant height that grows naturally in the forest border and bright forests of Hokkaido to Kyushu in Japan. From the flower stalk, 3 to 6 leaves with long oval and clear veins are emitted alternately. The leaves hold the stems.
In spring, it brings out flower stems between the leaves and blooms a few small white flowers in the ascending inflorescence extending from the tip. The flowers are half open and do not open completely. The corolla is orchid-shaped and consists of 3 pieces and 3 petals. The tip of the lip flaps three. The capsule is achieved after the flower.
It is called Gin-ran, contrasting it with Golden Orchid(Kin-ran,scientific name: Cephalanthera falcata) blooming at the same time. In the same genus, there are Sasaba-ginran (Azalea ginran) whose leaves are in the form of leaves and flowers are white.
