What is Rudbeckia hirta

Rudbeckia hirta or Black-eyed-Susan (scientific name: Rudbeckia hirta), one of the representative varieties of Rudbeckia, is a cold-resistant perennial or annual herb native to North America in the Asteraceae family. It is also known as Black-eyed-Susan, and Aragehangonso or Matsukasa-giku in Japanese.
The grass is 40 to 90 cm tall. In summer, inflorescences grow out from between the spatula-shaped rhizomatous leaves and produce yellow or orange head flowers 6 to 10 cm in diameter. The flowers have a shiny brown central core that is raised high. The long, slender stems are easily disrupted by the wind, and the grass is often tied up with string.

Origin of the name

The genus name “Rudbeckia” is a dedication to botanists Dr. Olof Rudbeck the Younger and Dr. Olaus Rudbeck. The species name “hirta” means “hairy” in Latin and refers to the white hairs on the stem and leaves.
