What is Crinum bulbispermum
The African Lily, scientifically known as Crinum bulbispermum, is a hardy evergreen perennial (bulbous plant) from the Amaryllidaceae family, native to South Africa. It thrives in warm climates and is commonly found in sandy coastal areas and flowerbeds.
Its thick, glossy basal leaves are a common feature, being long, thick, and green with a shiny surface. From the base of these leaves, a slightly flattened and thick flower stalk (pseudostem) emerges.
In the summer evenings, it produces an umbel at the tip of the flower stalk, bearing numerous funnel-shaped flowers that resemble white lilies. The flowers bloom fully at night, emitting a fragrance that attracts hawk moths for pollination.
The fruit is spherical, and when mature, it splits open, releasing seeds that fall and drift in the ocean until they reach a new beach where they can germinate. While white flowers are typical, some horticultural varieties also have pink flowers.
