Macrosepalum

Macrosepalum is a Japanese unique species and is a (semi) deciduous leaf shrub of the azalea family. It lives in the hills of Okayama and Shikoku from south Shizuoka prefecture. The bark has a dark gray brown color. It is sticky with flowers, sticky liquid from the calyx, branch gland hair, so it defends insects. It is the origin of flower name that sticky mucus resembles "birds". Among insects, there is a stink bug that lives in this kind of glandular hair. In the spring, flowers with dark red spots scattered on white grounds and purple grounds will bloom. The flower has a funnel shape and its tip is 5 deep. In autumn, after red leaves turn red brown, leaves other than the leaves around the winter bud fall.
