What is Peach

Birth flowers for Mar 3, Apr 12

Peach ( Scientific Name: Amygdalus persica, Synonym: Amygdalus persica) is a deciduous fruit tree of the Rosaceae family and the Amygdalus genus, originally from China.
In English, it is called Peach. In China, the peach blossom is cherished as a flower that wards off misfortune and brings good fortune.
Peaches were introduced to Japan during the Yayoi period (circa 300 BCE–300 CE). In the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters), there is a description of Izanagi throwing peaches to escape from evil spirits.
Since the Heian period, peach blossoms have been admired during the Peach Festival (Hinamatsuri). Even today, March 3rd is celebrated as Hinamatsuri, a festival wishing for the healthy growth of girls.

The peach tree grows to about 5 meters tall.
Its leaves vary in color, including green and red, and are arranged alternately.
Between March and May, it blooms with five-petaled or double-layered pink flowers about 5 cm in diameter.
Between July and August (with most harvesting in August), it bears round edible fruit about 7.5 cm in diameter. The fruit's thin outer skin is pale pink, and its flesh ranges from light yellow to soft pink. It is soft, fragrant, juicy, and delicious.

Peach Trees Grow Quickly
Peach trees grow relatively fast. A Japanese proverb compares their growth rate with other plants:
"Peach (桃) and Chestnut (栗) take three years,
Persimmon (柿) takes eight years,
Loquat (枇杷) takes at least thirteen years."

Peach Varieties: For Fruits or Flowers
Peaches are categorized into those grown for their fruits and those grown for their flowers.

Peaches for Eating
The round summer fruits have a lovely reddish hue, soft and melting flesh, a sweet fragrance, and a juicy, delicious taste.
Some people have even expressed the desire to press their cheeks against the fruit, but due to its fuzzy skin, this is not advisable.
Popular edible peach varieties include:

Akatsuki (暁)
Hakuhō (白鳳)
Kawanakajima (川中島)
Ōtō (黄桃, Yellow Peach)
However, peaches contain allergenic substances, so some people need to be cautious when consuming them.

Peaches for Flowers
Flowering peach trees come in various growth forms, such as upright, weeping, and broom-like shapes.
Their blossoms are often double-petaled and appear in pink, white, or red, commonly used to decorate for the Peach Festival (Hinamatsuri) on March 3rd.
Notable flowering peach varieties include:

Kikumomo (菊桃, Chrysanthemum Peach)
Genpei (源平, Red-and-White Peach)
Juseitō (寿星桃, Longevity Peach)
Yaguchi (矢口, Yaguchi Peach)

The flower language (symbolic meaning) of peaches is "Charming" and "Madly in Love with You".
