What is Buddleja

Buddleja (Common Name: Buddleja, Scientific Name: Buddleja davidii) is a hardy deciduous shrub native to China and Japan, belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family. It's names include oakleaf hydrangea, summer lilac, butterfly-bush, and orange eye. In Japanese, it is known as Fusafuji-utsugi or Nishikifuji-utsugi.

The shrub grows to a height of 300–500 cm. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate to long-lanceolate, measuring 5–25 cm in length, with toothed margins and opposite arrangement on the branches.

From June to October, it produces numerous small flowers (about 1 cm in length) on panicles that extend 20–50 cm from the leaf axils. Viewed from a distance, these panicles resemble large flower clusters. Each small flower has a cup-shaped corolla with an orange eye in the center and four-lobed petals. The flowers come in a variety of colors, including purple, red, pink, orange, white, yellow, blue-violet, and fuchsia. The leaves, branches, and root bark contain compounds with insecticidal, detoxifying, and bruise-healing properties.
