What is Bulbophyllum maximum
Megaclinium maximum (scientific name: Bulbophyllum maximum) is a creeping epiphytic orchid native to tropical Africa, including Nigeria and Cameroon, and belonging to the genus Bulbophyllum. It is also called Bulbophyllum platyrhachis or Synonyms Megaclinium platyrhachis. In its native habitat, it is distributed in moist areas. The grass is 60 cm tall. The pseudoscales (valves) are 3.5-10 cm long, 1-3 cm in diameter, with four ridges, connected by runners.
Two 10-20 cm long, oblong green leaves emerge from the base of the pseudoscale. In spring, a long, fleshy, dark purple, flattened, sickle-shaped flower stalk emerges from between the leaves. Because of the color and shape of this flower stalk, it is also known as cobra orchid. The top of the stem is broad, with many rows of orchid-shaped florets about 0.75 cm long on each side. The flowers do not all bloom at once, but rather four or so at a time, starting at the base of the stem. The creeping stems grow rapidly and reproduce.
