What is Calendula officinalis
Calendula officinalis (scientific name: Calendula officinalis) is an annual herb in the family Asteraceae, native to southern Europe, including the Canary Islands. It was introduced to Japan via China in the late Edo period. It is also called Pot Marigold (Pot marigold). The plant is 30-90 cm tall. The rhizomatous leaves are spatula-shaped and the stem leaves are oblong. From March to June, the plant produces single or double orange or yellow flowers with a diameter of about 10 cm from the stem tip. The flowers are one-day flowers, opening in the morning and closing in the evening. After flowering, it produces a thin fruit. As a member of the Asteraceae family, the stems and leaves have a distinctive odor, which is used as a fragrant oil in aromatic oils, soaps, shampoos, and other products. It has long been known as a herb in Europe, and is considered a medicinal herb in China. It is used in gardens, potted plants, flower beds, cut flowers, herbs, edible flowers, and for medicinal purposes.
