What is Camellia chrysantha
Chrysanth or the Kinkacha (Camellia chrysantha), also known as Yellow Camellia or Golden Camellia, is an evergreen shrub of the Camellia genus in the Theaceae family. It is native to China and Vietnam and is the first yellow-flowered camellia species introduced to Japan.
Due to its flower color, it is called Yellow Camellia or Golden Camellia in English, and sometimes referred to as Chrysantha from its scientific name.
Characteristics
The tree grows to a height of 4 to 6 meters, with smooth, grayish-white bark. The leaves are green, glossy, and lanceolate to oblong, measuring 10 to 19 cm in length and 4 to 7 cm in width, with fine serrations along the edges. They are arranged alternately on the branches.
From November to March, flowers bloom from the leaf axils or branch tips. Each flower is 5 to 7 cm in diameter, with 9 to 11 thick golden-yellow petals. The stamens are orange.
Although the plant is called Camellia, it is not suitable for making tea.
Origin of the Name
The genus name "Camellia" was given by Carl Linnaeus in honor of the missionary and botanist Georg Joseph Kamel (1661–1706). The species name "chrysantha" comes from Latin, meaning "golden flower".
