What is Keio-zakura

Tokai-zakura (Cerasus 'Takenakae') is a small deciduous shrub in the family Rosaceae. It is a cultivar of the kalamizakura family, selected from the seedlings of Cerasus 'Keio-zakura', which spread from Kurume City (Fukuoka Prefecture). Like the Keio-zakura, it is a crossbreeding variety of the Karami cherry (Cerasus pseudo-cerasus) and the Kohigan cherry (Cerasus kohiganensis), and was selected from the seedlings of both parents. The tree has a broom-like form with slanting branches. It has the same characteristics of its parent, Kohigan, but the sepals are shorter and the calyx tube is less constricted than on Kohigan.
It blooms before the equinoctial equinox and is used for cutting branches and flower arrangements because of its good appearance with many small flowers on the branches. It can be propagated by cutting branches and inserting them into the soil, as many small roots are produced on the branches.
It is similar to C. Keio-zakura. Keio-zakura is shipped a little earlier than C. keio-zakura, starting around December.
