What is Citrus pseudogulgul
Citrus pseudogulgul or oni-yuzu (scientific name: Citrus pseudogulgul) is an evergreen shrub and its fruit belonging to the genus Citrus of the family Rutaceae and is native to China. The tree is about 2 to 4 meters tall. The leaves are glossy, leathery, elliptic-lanceolate, and grow alternately on the branches. Around May, fragrant five-petaled white flowers bloom from the leaf axils. The flowers have a faint citrus scent, similar to grapefruit, rather than the strong, distinctive scent of yuzu. From October to December, it produces large, yellow, oval-shaped fruits with an uneven surface, about 20 cm in diameter. The fruit is large, but the cotton-like material between the rind and pulp is thick, and the pulp is small. The pulp is dry and lacking in flavor, so it is not suitable for eating raw. It is used to make jam, marmalade, peel, and other processed products, or as a substitute for yuzu bath. It is also used for decoration as a good-luck charm to ward off evil because of its large fruit (although the pulp is actually small) and its strong face.
It is called oniyuzu or shishiyuzu (lion's yuzu) because the fruit resembles a yuzu and is large and burly. According to one theory, oninyuzu and shishiyuzu are different plants.
