What is Amazon Lily
Amazon Lily (Scientific Name: Eucharis grandiflora) is a perennial plant belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family and the Eucharis genus. It is native to the upper Amazon River region in Colombia and can be seen in greenhouse botanical gardens in Japan.
It is also known by other names, such as Hosta Narcissus, Eucharis, and Eucharis Lily.
The plant grows to a height of 40–50 cm.
Its oval-shaped leaves are significantly larger than its flowers.
In its native habitat, it blooms year-round, whereas in Japan, it flowers from October to February, producing 6–10 cm wide, fragrant, pure white blooms in umbel-shaped clusters at the tips of its flower stalks.
Each flower has six tepals and a shallow crown-like corona, similar to that of a daffodil, at its center.
The inside of the corona is greenish, with six stamens at the tip, and white anthers. From the center of the corona, a single long pistil extends outward, ending in a three-lobed stigma.
Origin of the Name
The name "Amazon Lily" comes from its place of origin.
The genus name "Eucharis" is derived from the Greek words "Eu" (good) + "charis" (graceful/charming), referring to the flower's pure white color, fragrance, and beauty.
The species name "grandiflora" is a combination of "grandi" (large) + "flora" (flower), meaning "large-flowered".
