What is Geranium erianthum

Geranium erianthum, the Chishima-furo ( scientific name: Geranium erianthum) is a perennial herb native to China, Japan, Russia, North America, and the United Kingdom, belonging to the Geraniaceae family and the Geranium genus. It grows naturally in rocky areas and grasslands in the subalpine to alpine zones of Hokkaido and Tohoku in Japan. The plant height ranges from 20 to 50 cm. The leaves are palmate with 5 to 7 deep lobes, further divided into finer segments.

From June to August, the plant extends cymose inflorescences from the tips of its branches, either singly or in clusters, with each cluster bearing two flowers. The petals are blue-purple and form five-petaled flowers with a diameter of 2.5-3 cm. The outer base of the petals has long white hairs, while the inside is hairless. The sepals have nectar glands and long white hairs.

Origin of the Name
The genus name "Geranium" is derived from the Latin word "geranos" (crane), named for its long fruit resembling a crane's beak. The species name "erianthum" is a Greek compound word "eri-" (covered with soft hairs) and "anthum" (flower), meaning "flower covered with soft hairs," referring to the long white hairs at the base of the outer side of the petals and on the sepals.
