Larix kaempferi, karamatsu, or the Japanese larch (scientific name: Larix kaempferi) is a deciduous needle-leaved tree of the family Pinaceae. It grows naturally in the mountains of the central Honshu region. The tree is 20-30 m tall with a trunk diameter of 1 m. The crown is broadly conical with horizontal main and side branches, and the bark is dark brown. The bark is dark brown. The leaves are needle-like, light green, 2-5 cm long, yellowish in autumn, and deciduous. It is dioecious. The male flowers are yellow and downward-facing, and the female flowers are light red and upward-facing. 2- to 3.5-cm-long cones are borne in September and October.
