What is Makinoa crispata

Makinoa crispata or Makino moss (scientific name: Makinoa crispata) is a moss plant native to East and Southeast Asia in the family Makinoaceae. It grows naturally on moist ground, rocks, and fallen trees in the lowlands of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and the Ryukyu Islands. This species alone constitutes one genus and one species.
There are three groups of ryophytes: the liverworts, hornworts and mosses. Makinoa crispata is a member of the hornworts.
The leaflets (phyllodes, thallus) are 5 to 8 cm long and 1 to 1.5 cm wide, dark green, flattened with wavy leaf margins. Reddish-brown pseudorhizoids (rhizoids) grow densely on the ventral midrib of the leaflets. It is dioecious.

Antheridia-Spermatophyte
An oval tub-like structure is formed at the tip of the leaf blade of male plants, in which many male organs (spermatophores) are produced. In early spring, the sporangia extend from the phloem by a thin, match-like yellow-green capsule (seta), the tip of which bears a blackish-brown, oval-shaped saku. One of the capsules splits open to release a brown thread, which is entwined with the green spores and sends them flying. The spores decay in a few days.

Archegonium-Ovules
The female thallus forms an archegonium in the depression at the tip, in which the egg cell (egg) is fertilized and the mature sporophyte grows.

Dr. Tomitaro Makino collected this species in Chiba Prefecture in 1898.

Origin of the Japanese name
The Japanese name, family, genus, and species are dedications to Dr. Tomitaro Makino.
