These peonies bloom as if it were spring, with vibrant green leaves intact.

Here, the Winter Peony (Japanese: 冬牡丹, Romanized: Fuyubotan, Scientific Name: Paeonia suffruticosa 'Fuyu Botan') is a horticultural variety of the cold-hardy, deciduous shrub known as the Tree Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa), which originates from China. Winter peonies are typically in full bloom from January to February, with winter peony exhibitions held in display gardens from New Year's to late February.

This shrub grows to a height of 100–150 cm and spreads laterally with branching. The stems are gray-brown in color. The leaves are bi- or tri-pinnately compound, with leaflets measuring 5–8 cm in length and 3–7 cm in width, and have a long ovate shape with serrated edges, arranged alternately on the branches.

The flowers bloom from January to February, measuring 15–20 cm in diameter. They are large, double-layered, and exhibit a raised bloom with a deep pink color. Because the flower stems are short, the blossoms appear to bloom just above the leaves.
