What is Japanese red Pine

Birth flowers for Nov 14

The Japanese Red Pine (scientific name: Pinus densiflora) is an evergreen coniferous tree of the Pinaceae family and genus Pinus, native to Japan, Korea, and China.
It is also known by other names, such as Mematsu (female pine) or Onnamatsu (female pine) in Japanese, and Japanese Red Pine in English.
In Japan, it naturally grows from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu.

The tree reaches a height of 10–35 meters, and its bark is reddish-brown. Its new shoots have a reddish hue, and the trunk exhibits a supple curve.
Distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, its needle-like leaves help prevent the loss of heat through transpiration.
The leaves are arranged in pairs on the branches, forming bundles. Such two-leafed pines are called "two-needle pines."
The leaves fall off the branches after a few years.

The tree is monoecious, and from April to May, it produces strobile-like inflorescences.
The male flowers are yellowish-brown, while the female flowers are reddish-purple, both lacking petals.
In October of the following year, ovate-conical cones are formed.

The tree is used as street trees, windbreaks, sandbreaks, garden trees, bonsai, and floral materials.
Matsutake mushrooms (Tricholoma matsutake) grow in red pine forests.

Japanese Red Pine and Black Pine
The Japanese Red Pine, along with the Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii), is considered a representative of "two-needle pines."
The bark of the Black Pine is dark, while that of the Japanese Red Pine is red, giving them their respective names.
The Black Pine is also known as the "male pine" because its needles are stiff and slightly thick, whereas the Japanese Red Pine, known as the "female pine," has soft and slightly thin needles.
