What is Tricyrtis flava
Yellow Toad Lily (Flower)
Tricyrtis flava, known as the Yellow Toad Lily, is an endemic species to Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan. It is a hardy perennial belonging to the family Liliaceae. This plant grows naturally on slopes along valleys. It reaches a height of 20–50 cm, with stems sparsely covered with stiff spreading hairs. The leaves are green, 8–20 cm long, lanceolate, and alternately attached to the stem, with dark spots on their surface.
From September to November, it produces 1–2 upward-facing flowers on a 2–6 cm flower stalk that grows from the leaf axils. The flowers are cup-shaped and open flat, with six perianth segments. The yellow flowers have a diameter of 4–6 cm, with scattered purple spots known as "Toad Lily markings," and a dark yellow nectar guide at the base to attract insects. There are six stamens, with filaments that curve along the style and have outward-facing anthers producing pollen. The style of the pistil is trifid and further splits into two. After flowering, it produces a capsule fruit. This species is listed as Vulnerable (VU) in the endangered species category.
Origin of the Flower Name
The name of the flower comes from its resemblance to the spotted pattern on the chest of the bird known as the Japanese Lesser Cuckoo (Cuculus poliocephalus). The genus name "Tricyrtis" is derived from the Latin meaning "three spurs," which are illustrated in the diagram. The species name "flava" means "yellow," referring to the flower's color.
Characteristics of the Yellow Toad Lily
The Yellow Toad Lily (Tricyrtis flava) has yellow petals with purple spots, similar to the Toad Lily (Tricyrtis hirta). The flower stalk is long.
