What is Viola sieboldiana

Viola sieboldiana or Higo-sumire (scientific name: Viola chaerophylloides var. sieboldiana) is a heat- and cold-resistant perennial herb of the violet family, Violetaceae, with sparkler-like snappy leaves, endemic to Japan. It grows naturally in sunny meadows in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu south of Akita Prefecture. The height of the herb is 5 to 10 cm. It is a stemless species of violet with leaves and flower stalks emerging from the base of the plant without a developed above-ground stem. The short underground stem produces rhizomatous leaves and reddish-purple flower stalks.
From March to May, a single fragrant, lip-shaped flower blooms at the tip of the petiole. The flowers are mainly white (sometimes pale red) with a yellowish-green base. The flowers are 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter and 1 to 1.5 cm long, with hairs on the inner base of the lateral petals. The lip petals are streaked with reddish-purple and have a 0.5-cm long, thick talus. The sepals are lanceolate. After flowering, the capsule ripens and splits into three when ripe, sending the seeds flying far and wide. It is used for potted plants.
