What is Weigela floribunda
Weigela floribunda, Crimson weigelaor , or yabu-utsugi ( scientific name: Weigela floribunda ) , endemic to Japan, is a deciduous shrub in the family Caprifoliaceae. It grows naturally on sunny slopes in the mountains on the Pacific side of Honshu's Kanto to Shikoku regions. The tree is 200-300 cm tall, well branched, and grows in a thicket-like shape. Many utsugi trees have no pith, but this tree has pith. The leaves are elliptic and densely hairy on the underside, with serrations on the leaf margins. The petiole is short and there are no masticatory leaves. From late spring to early summer, the inflorescence grows in clusters from the leaf axils and produces three to five small trumpet-shaped flowers with five lobes at the tip. The flowers are dark red. There are many hairs on the corolla, flower tube, and branchlets.
