What is Allium chinense

Allium litorale or hamarakkyo (scientific name: Allium litorale) is a bulbous plant (perennial herb) native to Japan and belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae. It grows wild in coastal grasslands and rocky shrubland on the Miura Peninsula, Izu Peninsula, and Iki Islands. The grass is 20-60 cm tall. The bulbs are large and long. From November to December, long, slender flower stalks emerge from between the rhizomatous leaves and produce large, pale reddish-purple, spherical, diffuse inflorescences at the tips. The corolla is a six-petaled flower with eight stamens and one pistil protruding from each petal. It is similar to A. thunbergii, but A. thunbergii has hollow leaves, while A. litorale has medium-sized leaves.
