What is Cistus ladanifer

Cistus ladanifer , also known as Gum Tock-rose, is an evergreen shrub native to the western Mediterranean regions such as Southern Europe and North Africa. In its native habitat, it grows in forests, along roadsides, in agricultural fields, and grasslands.

It typically grows to a height of 1-2 meters and is covered with a resinous substance that gives off a strong odor, rendering the entire plant opaque. The branches and leaves are hairy. The leaves are dark green, lanceolate, with pointed tips, and measure about 5-6 cm in length. They have entire margins and are arranged oppositely.

In May and June, it produces flowers with a diameter of 8 cm, consisting of five white petals with yellow bases and red spots at the base. The stamens are yellow and conspicuous. The fruit is a capsule. Its uses include cultivation in gardens and pots, as well as being a source of the fragrance "Labdanum" and medicinal purposes (as an antidiarrheal).

The name "Cistus" comes from the Latin "kistos," an ancient name for rockrose, and "ladanifer" means "bearing gum resin" in Latin.

Another species in the same genus is Cistus albidus, known as Gum Tock-rose, which produces pink flowers that bloom for half a day.
