What is Anemonopsis macrophylla
Anemonopsis macrophylla (scientific name: Anemonopsis macrophylla) is a perennial herb in the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. It is slow-growing and grows sparsely in the semi-shade of moist soil in mountainous to deep mountainous areas in Honshu. It produces dark-colored stems from rhizomes and reaches a plant height of 40 to 100 cm (average: 80 cm).
It has both rhizomatous and stem leaves. The leaves are compound, 5 to 10 cm long, and have sharp serrations. Three to seven light purple flowers hang from weakly branched conical inflorescences. The flowers are downward-facing, with 7 to 10 large petal-like sepals and 10 to 13 slightly smaller petals clustered in a tubular shape around the stamens. The tips of the petals are dark purple. The flowers have a faint fragrance. Stamens are numerous. The pistil has an upper ovary and a long neck. The flower resembles a lotus and the leaves resemble those of Sarashina shoma, hence the name of the flower.

The perennial plant "Kirengeshoma (scientific name: Kirengeshoma palmata)," which belongs to a different family and genus (Hydrangeaceae), has yellow flowers similar to those of lotus (Anemonopsis macrophylla).
