What is Camellia Tosauraku
Camellia 'Tosauraku' (Tsubaki Tosauraku, Tosauraku, Scientific name: Camellia japonica 'Tosauraku')
Camellia 'Tosauraku' is a cultivated variety of camellia with a single trumpet-shaped pink flower, medium-sized (approximately 8 cm in diameter), blooming from February to April.
It is said that this camellia was brought from Tokyo to Kochi by Toshimasa Terada, the biological father of Torahiko Terada, and was also presented to the Makino Botanical Garden.
Resemblance to Wabisuke Camellia 'Tarokaja'
It resembles Wabisuke camellia, specifically Tarokaja = Yūraku (Camellia wabisuke 'Tarokaja'), but is considered a different species due to its larger flowers and leaves, and the absence of the characteristic fine hairs found in Wabisuke camellias.
"Tarokaja" was the Edo-era name, while "Yūraku" was the name used in Kyoto.
Difference Between Tosauraku and Yūraku
The flower diameter of Yūraku is about 5 cm, whereas Tosauraku has a larger flower of about 8 cm and larger leaves.
Tosauraku lacks the fine hairs characteristic of Wabisuke camellias.
Origin of the Name
The name Tosauraku comes from its resemblance to Yūraku and its discovery in Kochi (Tosa).
