What is Cercidiphyllum japonicum

Cercidiphyllum japonicum , as known as Katsura tree (scientific name: Cercidiphyllum japonicum) is a deciduous broad-leaved tree from Japan to the Korean peninsula. The fresh green leaves and the autumn leaves are beautiful. In Japan, it grows naturally along the mountain stream in Hokkaido and Kyushu. The trunk is straight and becomes a large tree, and many branches go up like a bush. The bark is dark grayish brown with shallow vertical tears. The bark peels off from the rift as it ages. The leaves are broad egg-shaped, the base is heart-shaped, and there are serrated edges. Leaves are against each other. It is a male and female different strain. Before the leaves come out in April, let the small flowers bloom on the leaves. Male and female flowers have no petals or buds, only buds wrapped in buds. Male flowers have only stamens, cocoons are crimson, female flowers have only 3-5 thin stamens, and stigmas are light red and filamentous. The material is light and soft, easy to process, less crazy, durable and fragrant. The heartwood is brown and the sapwood is white. Trees are used for park trees and street trees, timber is used for building and furniture shelves and signboards, construction materials, clogs and utensils, and branches and leaves are used for sacred trees.
There is also a Cercidiphyllum japonicum “Shidare Katsura” with branches hanging down.
