The Japanese lily (Japanese lily, scientific name in the narrow sense: Convallaria majalis var. keiskei, or Convallaria keiskei) is native to Hokkaido and is considered a representative flower of Hokkaido. It is distributed from Hokkaido to the plains, mountains, and subalpine areas in the central region of Honshu. It is also called "kimikage-sou" (Japanese name: kimikage-sou) or "princess lily of the valley. The plant is 20 to 30 cm tall. The leaves are oblong ovals 15 to 20 cm long with two leaflets, between which flower stalks grow lower than the leaves. The petal tips are shallowly 6 lobed and the flowers are fragrant. The anthers of the stamens are white. Pollination produces spherical fruits that ripen to red after flowering. The anthers of the stamens are white, while the anthers of the German lily are reddish. Unfortunately, the whole plant contains poisonous substances such as convallatoxin (convallatoxin). Because it is treated as a wildflower, it is not widespread throughout Japan.

The German lily (scientific name: Convallaria majalis var. majalis) is native to Europe and has been bred for horticultural use. It is heat tolerant, has large flowers, and is a good flowerer.
