What is Corylus avellana

Corylus avellana (Common Hazel) – Overview

Common Hazel (Corylus avellana) is a deciduous shrub of the birch family (Betulaceae) and the hazel genus (Corylus), native to Europe. Hazelnut is the seed of the fruit of the Common Hazel, and its kernel is edible.
It was introduced to Japan during the Nara to Heian periods.

The tree grows to a height of 3-8 meters, with a maximum height of 15 meters.
Leaves develop after the flowers. They are heart-shaped, 16–12 cm long, similar to Tilia leaves, with serrated edges and alternately arranged on short petioles.
The plant is monoecious, with separate male and female flowers and self-incompatibility.

Male flowers bloom from December to March, forming catkin inflorescences and producing pale yellow flowers.
Female flowers bloom from March to April, forming spike inflorescences with red stigmas.
The fruit is a hard-shelled nut, 2 cm in diameter and 3 cm in length, round to oval-shaped (acorn-like), ripening in September.
The outer shell is yellow-brown, and the seed coat is reddish-brown.
The tree is used for hedges, its wood for construction and fencing, and the nut kernel is eaten raw or roasted. When ground into a paste, it is used in baking (cookies and cakes), lattes, and as a flavoring in cooking.
Hazelnuts are believed to have anti-aging properties and help prevent lifestyle-related diseases.
