What is Hylodesmum oldhamii
Hylodesmum oldhamii, or Fuji Kanzo (scientific name: Hylodesmum oldhamii) is a perennial wildflower native to Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and China, belonging to the genus Nusubitobagi (Fabaceae). It grows wild in grasslands and forests in the mountains of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The grass is 60 to 150 cm tall. It has odd pinnate compound leaves consisting of 5 or 7 lobes. The lobes are ovate to oblong-ovate, 8 to 16 cm long and 2 to 6 cm wide. In August to September, it produces a flower stalk, at the end of which grows a raceme of inflorescences with small pink to pale red butterfly-shaped flowers. The name of the flower is derived from the resemblance of the leaves to the kanzo and the flowers to the wisteria. The fruit after the flower is a nodding fruit consisting of two triangular nodules, with one seed in each nodule. The surface of the fruit is covered with a single hooked hair, a kind of hookworm that attaches itself to animals and moves about. The genus name "Hylodesmum" means "forest-dwelling hylodes" and the species name "oldhamii" is a reference to the English plant collector Richard Oldham.
