What is Japanese Iris 'Aoi-no-ue'

The Japanese Iris 'Aoi-no-ue' (Iris ensata var. ensata 'Aoi-no-ue') is a cultivar of the perennial herb 'Iris' in the Iris family (Iridaceae). This particular variety belongs to the Edo group and features three-lobed flowers with a flat blooming habit. The outer petals are pale pink with dense dark purple veins, the inner petals are reddish-purple with a white border, and the outer petals are large, round, and slightly drooping with slightly curled edges. The central eye is a noticeable yellow, and it is a medium-sized early bloomer.

The 'Aoi-no-ue' variety is known for its elegant and vivid color pattern reminiscent of kimono designs and can grow to a height of over 130 cm. It produces two flowers at the top of its stem, with the first flower blooming for about three days, followed by the second bloom.
