What is Lodoicea maldivica
Lodoicea maldivica Double coconut, Sea coconut, Seychelles nut or giant coconut(scientific name: Lodoicea maldivica) is endemic to Praslin and Curieuse in the Seychelles Islands. It is a tall evergreen tree in the family Arecaceae. It is the national flower of the Republic of Seychelles. Its slender trunk grows 25 to 35 meters tall, and its large, fan-shaped, 4-meter-long leaves spread out at its tip. It grows slowly, taking 2-3 years to bud and 25-30 years to flower. When the pericarp is removed, the butt-shaped seeds are revealed. The seeds are the largest and heaviest in the world, with a seed length of 40-60 cm and a weight of 20-30 kg. The seeds grow in the Seychelles Islands, and ripe fruits sometimes fall into the sea and drift to other countries, but they do not bear fruit. The genus name "Lodoicea" is a Latinized dedication to Louis XV, and the species name "maldivica" means "of the Maldives.
