What is Manettia luteorubra
Manettia luteorubra , firecracker vine or Brazilian firecracker (scientific name: Manettia luteorubra) is a non-tolerant, evergreen vine perennial plant native to Paraguay-Uruguay, in the family Rubiaceae. It has hairs on the stem, underside of the leaves, and on the corolla. It produces small, tubular, dark-orange flowers with contrasting yellow tips in summer and autumn. The flowers are aromatic, and the tips of the flowers are slightly widened with four shallow lobes, making them look like they are talking. It was introduced to Japan in the Edo period (1603-1868) and was named "arage kaenso" (rough-haired flame plant) because the corolla has coarse hairs and the shape of the flower reminds one of a candle flame. It is originally a summer plant and is not sensitive to cold, but the color and shape of the flowers resemble Christmas lights, so it is sold even in winter. Since it is a vine, it is potted to be moved around in a lantern style. The genus name "Manettia" is a dedication to Mr. Manetti, Director of the Botanical Garden in Florence, Italy. The species name "luteorubra" is a coined word from "luteo" (pale yellow) and "rubra" (red).
