What is Paeonia japonica
Paeonia japonica (scientific name: Paeonia japonica) is a cold-resistant perennial herb (lodging plant) in the botanical family Paeoniaceae, native to Japan and the Korean Peninsula. It grows wild on the forest floor in mountainous areas and deep mountains from Hokkaido to Kyushu. The plant is 30-40 cm tall and produces one flower on a stalk after the leaves open. The flowers are white, 4-5 cm in diameter, with 5-7 petals, 3 pistils, and numerous stamens with contrasting yellow anthers. The flowers are short-lived, falling within 2 to 3 days. Like the peony (scientific name: Paeonia lactiflora), it has antispasmodic and analgesic properties. The seeds are black and the fruiting pods are black.
