What is Tora-mame

Tora-mame (scientific name: Phaseolus vulgaris 'Tora-mame') is a vine-like annual vegetable from the United States, belonging to the family Fabaceae and the genus kidney bean. It is a member of the family Fabaceae, the common bean family.
The variety "Concord pole" was imported from the U.S. during the Meiji period (1868-1912), and has been improved to produce new varieties such as "Improved Tora-mame" and "Fuku-tora-mame. The main production areas are the Iburi and Kitami regions of Hokkaido. They are used as high-grade green beans. They are white with yellow and brown spots that look like a tiger pattern. It is a different species from the safflower kidney bean (Chinese name: safflower kidney bean, Chinese name: 荷包豆, scientific name: Phaseolus coccineus).
