Japanese black pine (scientific name: Pinus thunbergii) is a tall evergreen coniferous tree in the family Pinusceae, native to Japan. The bark is grayish-black, the shoots are whitish and the trunk is strong. It is also called a pine tree because its hard leaves and branches spread out strongly. In contrast, red pinehas a slender trunk, reddish bark, soft leaves, and foliage that gently spread into a cone shape, hence the name "mematsu" (female pine). The pine needles are attached to the branch in bunches of 2-5 pine needles in one place, but after a few years they break away from the branch and fall off. The flowers are dioecious and each plant has a male flower with only stamens and a female flower with only stamens. The fruit is spherical and is called pine needle. The small, light yellow scales between the pine cones are the pine nuts; the black pine ones are too small to be used. Injuring the pine tree removes the pine sap, but over time it hardens into kohaku (amber).
