Cannabis sativa , Cannabis, hemp or asa (scientific name: Cannabis sativa) is an annual herb native to Central Asia and belonging to the family Cannabaceae. The herb is 1-3 m tall with erect stems. The leaves are palmately compound with 3 to 13 small lanceolate leaflets. It was cultivated for its fiber. It was harvested at the end of summer and peeled for fiber, which was used to make clothing. Until the spread of cotton and synthetic fibers, clothes were made from the fibers of asa, as well as kuzu, karamushi, kajinoki, fuji, and kouzo. Later, around the 9th century, the medicinal use of hemp began to become a problem in India. Asa is also known as hemp plant.
