What is Primula sieboldii 'Mejirodai'

Primula sieboldii 'Mejirodai' or Japanese Primrose 'Mejirodai' (Primula sieboldii 'Mejirodai') is a cold-hardy perennial plant and a cultivar of the Japanese Primrose (Primula sieboldii) belonging to the family Primulaceae.

In 1927, it was introduced by Yasuyasu Toda. The flower petals are thick, white on the front, with a pink-purple gradient on the back. The flowers are flat and semi-recurved with shallowly scalloped, widely overlapping petals. The thick flower stems and stiff leaves give the flowers a resemblance to the Western primrose "Polyanthus(Scientific Name: Primula polyantha)".

Origin of the Flower Name
The genus name of the Japanese primrose, "Primula," comes from the Latin word "primos," meaning "first," because it blooms early in spring. The species name "sieboldii" is derived from Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold, a German physician and naturalist who stayed at the Dutch trading post on Dejima in Nagasaki during the Edo period and sent numerous plant specimens overseas. The cultivar name "Mejirodai" is named after the Mejirodai area in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, where the presenter, Mr. Toda, lived at that time.
