What is Rhododendron quinquefolium

Rhododendron quinquefolium (scientific name: Rhododendron quinquefolium) is a deciduous, broad-leaved, small to medium-sized tree of the genus Rhododendron of the family Ericaceae, endemic to Japan. It grows naturally on rocky terrain in the mountains on the Pacific side of Japan south of Iwate Prefecture. It is a large tree in the azalea family. Its name is derived from the five leaves that grow in a wheel-like pattern. It is also known as "pine bark" because the bark of old trees peels off like a pine tree. One or two white funnel-shaped flowers with five lobes bloom downward at the same time as the leaves open. There is a green spot on the inside top of the corolla. This is the imperial seal of His Imperial Highness Princess Aiko.
