What is Saxifraga cortusifolia
Saxifraga cortusifolia or jinjisou(scientific name: Saxifragaceae) is a perennial herb in the saxifrage family (Saxifragaceae) and endemic to Japan. It grows naturally in the mountains from the Kanto region west to Kyushu, on shady, slightly moist, rocky slopes and along mountain streams.
The maximum height of the plant is 40 cm. The rhizomatous leaves attached to the petiole are kidney-shaped, 7 to 11 deep, and have serrated edges. The tips of the thin, well-divided branches produce a concentrated to conical inflorescence, which bears small, irregular, five-petaled white flowers. The upper three petals are short and spade-shaped, while the two lower petals are long and drooping and look like the Chinese character for "person(人)". This is the origin of its Japanese name.
Flowers of the same genus
S. cortusifolia (scientific name: Saxifraga cortusifolia) is similar to S. stolonifera (scientific name: Saxifraga stolonifera), but the spots on the upper petals of S. stolonifera flowers are dark red, while those of S. cortusifolia are yellow.
It is similar to Daimonjisou(S. fortunei) , but their leaf shapes are different. The leaves of S. fortunei have deep lobes like those of S. cortusifolia, while those of S. fortunei have shallow lobes.
