Shortia uniflora or Iwauchiwa (scientific name: Shortia uniflora) is a perennial herb endemic to Japan, belonging to the family Diapensiaceae. It grows wild in forests in the production area from the Tohoku region to the Chugoku region. Japanese name ' Iwauchiwa' of the flower is derived from the fact that it blooms on rocks 'iwa' in mountainous areas and its leaves are fan-shaped 'Uchiwa'. The genus name Shortia is a dedication to the American botanist Charles W. Short, and the species name uniflora is a compound of "uni" (one) and "floris" (flower), meaning "one flower" per flower stalk. Short.
Iwauchiwa and iwakagami are similar. The difference is that the leaves of 'Iwauchiwa' are round like a fan, while 'iwakagami' are heart-shaped. 'Iwauchiwa' has only one flower per stem, while 'iwakagami' has multiple flowers per stem.
