What is Sophora flavescens

Sophora flavescens or Shrubby sophora (scientific name: Sophora flavescens) is a large perennial herb of the genus Clara (Fabaceae), native to Japan and China. In Japan, it is distributed in the mountains from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. The stems are erect, and the lower part is columnar and woody. The leaves are odd pinnate compound leaves 15-20 cm long, with 15-40 long oval lobes attached in alternate clusters. In May and June, it produces numerous light yellow butterfly-shaped flowers in a raceme at the stem end. The root is bitter and is used to make the herbal medicine "kuzin. The whole plant is poisonous. It is a food plant of the oriental whitebait.
