What is Symphyotrichum novi-belgii

Symphyotrichum novi-belgii, New York Aster, Michaelmas daisy or Yuzen-giku (Symphyotrichum novi-belgii, synonym: Aster novi-belgii) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Eastern Canada and the Northeastern United States. It belongs to the Aster family (Asteraceae) and is a naturalized species in Japan. It is also known as Shukune Aster, Meriken Kongiku, Shinonome Giku, and by its English names, New York Aster and Michaelmas Daisy. In its native habitat, it grows in disturbed fields and moist meadows. In Japan, it was introduced in the Meiji period and has since naturalized throughout the country.

Among perennial asters, lower-growing varieties are often called Yuzen-giku, while taller varieties may be referred to as Kujaku Aster (Aster hybrids).

This plant reaches 20–50 cm in height, with erect stems that branch upward. Its lance-shaped leaves are sessile, alternate, and may be entire or toothed. From June to November, it blooms with 2–4 cm flowers in shades of white, pink, purple, or lilac. Many cultivars bred in Europe are also widely available.

Origin of the Name:
The name Yuzen-giku originates from the vivid colors resembling those of Yuzen-dyed fabrics. The English name Michaelmas Daisy refers to the plant's bloom time around Michaelmas (September 29). The genus name Symphyotrichum comes from Greek words meaning “growing together” and “hair,” referring to the ring-shaped arrangement of the pappus hairs at the base. The species name novi-belgii means "of New York" (from "New Belgium").

Flower Meaning:
The flower symbolizes "Energetic spirit, not yielding to youth" and "Remaining lively in old age."
