What is Teucrium montanum
Teucrium montanum, commonly known as Mountain Germander or mistakenly as Mountain Gelmander, is a perennial evergreen herb or dwarf shrub in the Lamiaceae family, native to southern Europe, Central Europe, and southwestern Asia including Turkey. In Japanese, it is called Yamani-gakusa (山苦草).
In the European Alps, it grows in sunny, well-drained, limestone-rich rocky soils. The plant typically reaches a height of 10-25 cm and spreads out, forming a dense ground cover. Its leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, aromatic, and hairy on the underside. From June to August, it produces complex-shaped flowers that are pale yellow with a hint of white, approximately 2.5 cm in diameter, just above the leaves.
Teucrium montanum is used as ground cover and in rock gardens.
