What is Warszewiczia coccinea
Warszewiczia coccinea or Wild poinsettia (scientific name: Warszewiczia coccinea) is a tropical evergreen shrub in the genus Warszewiczia of the family Acanthaceae, native to tropical America, including Mexico and the West Indies. It grows wild in moist forests at altitudes up to 2,000 meters.
The Japanese name is derived from "Shojo" (red) and "Toranoo" (tiger's tail) because of its long inflorescence. The plant is different from other plants in the Torano-o family.
What looks like a red flower is a bract.
The root has an anise flavor and is believed to have aphrodisiac and anti-cancer properties. The leaves are oblong and drooping. What looks like a flower is a red calyx and the real flower is a small yellow one.
The genus name 'Warszewiczia' is a dedication to the Polish plant collector Dr. J. Warszewicz. The species name 'coccinea' means "red" in Latin.
There are two garden varieties: Double chaconia, which has two rows of bracts, and David Auyong, which has double flowers with two rows of bracts.
The national flower of Trinidad and Tobago is the 'David Auyong', which was in bloom on August 31, the day the country gained independence from Great Britain.
