Beautiful Autumn Foliage

Beautiful Autumn Foliage

Deep crimson koyo (autumn foliage) like the vivid momiji leaves and golden leaves like those of the ginkgo tree have been gathered together.

Japan, with its long north-to-south stretch, experiences the autumn foliage season at different times depending on the region. In Hokkaido, the best viewing time is from mid-September to October. In Tohoku, Chubu, and Hokuriku, it’s from late October to early November. In Kanto, it’s from early November to early December. For Chugoku and Shikoku, mid-November to early December is ideal, while Kyushu’s best foliage can be seen from late November to early December.

The deep crimson hues of momiji are rare even on a global scale, and international visitors are often deeply moved by the vibrant reds. Many consider autumn the best season to visit Japan. Let’s take the time to savor the beauty of Japan’s autumn landscapes, adorned with both the brilliant reds of koyo and the golden yellows of oyo.

Yellow Leaves

The golden hues are due to carotenoid pigments, seen in trees such as *Ichou* (ginkgo), *Itayakaede* (Norway maple), *Karamatsu* (Japanese larch), *Katsura*, *Buna* (Japanese beech), *Shirakaba* (white birch), *Mizunara* (oak), *Mukuji*, *Enoki*, *Yurinoki* (tulip tree), *Tosamizuki*, *Nanakama*, *Asanohakaede*, *Chidorinoki*, *Aohada*, *Akashide*, *Aogiri* (yellow to brown), *Azukina*, *Aburachan*, *Inubi*, and *Akamegashiwa*.
