What is Izayoi zakura
Izayoi zakura (scientific name: Cerasus jamasakuraa 'Izayoi zakura', synonyms: Prunus jamasakura 'Izayoi zakura') is an early-blooming garden variety of the Cerasus jamasakura(yamazakura, mountain cherry) family. It grows wild in the mountains and fields of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. It is a tall tree, reaching a height of 30 meters, with purple-brown bark. The single, ovate leaves, which are attached at the end of a red petiole, are serrated. The young leaves are reddish brown. 5-petaled single white flowers, 3 to 3.5 cm in diameter, bloom in February in clustered inflorescences. The flower stalks are short and look like Cauliflory. The name "16th night" refers to the 16th day of the lunar calendar, and this species is so named because it blooms around January 16 (February 15) of the lunar calendar.
The buds are red and the flowers are white. It is considered a natural treasure by Matsuyama City. The buds are red and the flowers are white.
It was made known overseas in "Kwaidan (ghost stories)" by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo).
