What is Primula sieboldii ''Bureiko"

Primula sieboldii 'Bureiko' or Japanese Primrose 'Bureiko' (Scientific Name: Primula sieboldii 'Bureiko') is a hardy perennial cultivar of the primrose family (Primulaceae), specifically the species Primula sieboldii. This second-generation cultivar was recognized in 1982.

It has large flowers that are flat and open, with a bright grayish-pink color (toki-iro) that occasionally includes red streaks. The petals are broad with a finely split edge (kagari wide petal) and have a white eye in the center.

Features of Japanese Primrose 'Bureiko'
Flower Shape: Flat (when viewed from the side, the flower opens fully and appears flat like the "paper" gesture in rock-paper-scissors)
Petal Shape: Broad (wider than the standard type)
Petal Tips: Kagari petal (finely split tips)
The term "Kagari petal" refers to a petal with finely split or serrated edges, giving it a distinctive fringed or jagged appearance.
This unique petal shape is often seen in certain varieties of flowers and adds a decorative and intricate element to the bloom.
Flower Color and Eye: Toki-iro (traditional Japanese color, #f4b3c2) with occasional red streaks, and a white eye at the base center
Flower Orientation: Upward-facing
Style Type: Short-styled
Flower Size: Large (4.8 cm, 4-5 cm)

Origin of the Flower Name
The genus name "Primula" is derived from the Latin "primos," meaning "first," because it blooms early in spring. The species name "sieboldii" honors Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold, a German physician and naturalist who stayed at the Dutch trading post on Dejima in Nagasaki during the Edo period and sent numerous plant specimens overseas. The cultivar name 'Bureiko' refers to the Japanese custom of enjoying a banquet regardless of rank or formalities, but the connection to the flower name is unclear.
