What is Caesalpinia decapetala
Caesalpinia decapetala (Caesalpinia decapetala var. japonica) is a small deciduous shrub in the Fabaceae family. In Japan, it grows wild in sunny locations in the mountains and along riverbanks from Kanto to Kyushu. It is 1-2 m tall and has hooked thorns on its stems and leaves. The leaves are pinnate compound even-numbered twice, and the overall length of the leaf is 20-40 cm. The lobes are oblong-ovate, 1-2 cm long, 0.8-1 cm wide, and alternate. It produces young branches that grow into a 30 cm long inflorescence at the tip, which produces numerous yellow five-petaled flowers with a 2.5 to 3 cm corolla from March to June. The fruit is a pea-sized berry up to 10 cm long. The seeds are dried in the sun and used in Chinese herbal medicine as an antipyretic for malaria. The genus name "Caesalpinia" is a dedication to the Italian physician and botanist Andrea Caesalpinus, and the species name "decapetala" means "having 10 (de-) petals (capetala). It is a toxic plant.
