What is Camellia Akashigata
Camellia Akashigata ( Akashigata, Scientific name: Camellia japonica 'Akashigata') is a Japanese-origin cultivar of the evergreen shrub Camellia japonica, belonging to the Theaceae family. It has been cultivated since the Edo period.
It is known as Lady Clare or Grandiflora Rosea. It was documented in 1859 in the "Tsubaki Iroha Nayose Irotsuke".
The tree grows to a height of 1 to 3 meters, and it has a large, vigorous, and spreading growth habit.
The leaves are large, thick, smooth, and slightly curled, with an elliptical to broad-elliptical shape, a tapered tip, and a rounded base. The leaves grow alternately and proliferate vigorously.
The flowering period is from December to February (early to mid-season). The flowers are large to very large (12–14 cm) and semi-double to double, with a flat, open form. Their color ranges from pinkish-red to deep pink. The petals are about 13 in number, broad, and wide. This cultivar is one of the largest-flowered varieties among Japanese camellias.
The stamens are small, tubular, with yellow filaments. The flowers have no fragrance.
