What is Eleocharis mamillata var. cyclocarpa

Eleocharis mamillata var. cyclocarpa or Onuma hari rush (Eleocharis mamillata var. cyclocarpa) is a perennial herb (alpine plant) in the genus harii of the family Gentianaceae, native to Japan, the Korean Peninsula, China, and Ussuri. It grows wild in shallow ponds in the mountains of Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu. It produces long creeping branches and flower stalks that grow in bunches to form colonies. The plant is 30-70 cm tall, and is smaller than the kangaroo grass, which is a member of a different family and genus. The stem is cylindrical and soft, and produces a single oval to oval-shaped spikelet at the top of the stem from July to October. The small ears are composed of overlapping scales in a spiral shape. Between the scales are flowers with one pistil and three stamens. The flowers are followed by an ovoid fruit. The small ears are thicker than the stem, and the stem has no septum.

The genus name "Eleocharis" is a compound of the Latin words "eleos (swamp)" and "charis (decorate)," meaning "a plant that grows in lakes and marshes," the species name "mamillata" also means "papillose," and the variant name "cyclocarpa" comes from "cyclo (spiral)" and "carpa (fruit).
