What is Sweet Hydrangea
Sweet Hydrangea, or amacha(sweet tea), (Scientific Name: Hortensia serrata var. thunbergii) is a cold-hardy deciduous shrub, a variety of the Mountain Hydrangea, native to Japan. In Japan, it grows wild in forests and hillsides. In English, it is known as Sweet Hydrangea.
The plant grows to a height of about 100 cm.
The leaves are elliptical with serrated edges and are arranged oppositely on the branches.
From May to July, it produces corymbs or panicles of flowers, 15-30 cm in diameter. The plant bears both fertile and sterile flowers. The fertile flowers, found at the center, appear as small blue grains with five sepals, five petals, ten stamens, and three pistils. The sterile flowers are a few in number and surround the fertile ones. The color of the sterile flowers starts as pale purple and gradually changes to pale pink.
Tea and medicinal sweeteners unique to Japan are made from the leaves of this plant.
